The carriage rolled through the forest, and I found my memories landing on the night we had been dragged through it by the shadow-fae, and my desperation to be rescued by the Gold Court guards.

“It is no surprise that the Gold Court Queen hasn’t come to meet her sister,” grunted Svangrior.

“No,” I said. “She would spend large amounts of most royal addresses warning her people of the dangers of the shadow-fae and particularly, her sister and her stepson.” I glanced at Maz. “Does Queen Andask ever speak of her?”

“No. Though her eyes get a little more unhinged when her sister is mentioned in passing.”

“Why did either of them allow this to go ahead if they hate each other?”

Nobody had an answer.

“I wonder if Orm has more sway than I thought,” I mused.

“I had heard rumors of such.” Everyone turned to look at Lhoris. The single sentence was the most he had engaged with the shadow-fae, ever.

“You did?”

“Yes. For six months or so before this all started, I had overheard a number of nobles either plotting to cut his influence, or to ingratiate themselves with him. I had assumed he was moving closer to the Queen, but then when he announced he was taking a new bound concubine—” A growl rumbled from Mazrith, and Lhoris gave him long look before continuing. “I wondered if something else was afoot.”

“When did you last see the Queen?” asked Kara.

Lhoris looked thoughtful. “At her last public address.”

“Which was?”

“Nine months ago.” I stilled. I had not seen her in the palace since then either.

“We did notice a distinct lack of gold-fae guarding the palace the night you raided it, looking for us,” I said slowly.

“Looking for you,” Mazrith corrected. Svangrior snorted.

“As I told you then, it is because gold-fae are weak-minded and cowardly,” the warrior spat.

I stopped myself from looking at Maz. A secret gold-fae hybrid. Did comments like that sting him?

“You believe they are cowards because they are your enemy, but trust me, when there have been attacks before, the gold-fae have defended their wealth. They are not cowardly when it comes to greed.” I looked out at the forest, the mist clearing and the bright sky starting to shine through. “There was not enough resistance that night.”

Mazrith nodded slowly. “You think something may be orchestrated from within the Gold Court?”

“Perhaps.”

“Who would rule the Gold Court if anything happened to the Queen?”

“Her son,” said Kara. “But he is very young, only thirteen or fourteen. And besides, the Queen is a powerful fae with loyal guards, it would be no easy feat to usurp her.”

“Many a royal fae has been removed from power by nefarious means,” said Maz darkly.
